The 3 days Mithila Mural project aims to bring up the art form practitioners from different districts around Mithila region in Nepal and India to explore the personal narratives which are gradually losing or are overlooked over the years of the Mithila art practice. This outreach is conducted in collaboration with Heritage as Placemaking The 9 artists will be facilitated by PayalSapanaPaints for creating the mural art as a part of HAP Winter School 2024. The mural project is a two day event where the facilitators from PayalSapanaPaints will be conducting a two day workshop with the artists where they will be exploring place making and personal stories around their perception of change in Mithila art practices. They will develop a drawing for the mural painting from the workshop. The two days will include the mural drawing by the artists in the designated walls around the public spaces of the city.

Mithila Outreach Mural Project organized for professional artists from Nepal and India, Janakpur International Winter School, Janakpur, December, 2024.

The artists will include both Kachni-Bharni work of Mithila art and expand our art community. We want to share this art form with the participants and practice in order to incorporate the Mithila patterns in their own final work. It will be an interactive space for sharing and learning together to initiate the cultural exchange of this unique folk art form of Mithila art which is majorly practiced by women in the southern part of Nepal and Bihar & UP side of India.
The overall goal of this workshop is to introduce the participants to the notion of ‘heritage’ and ‘placemaking’ and how they are interlinked with the religious beliefs in order to create narratives around cultural identity. The motif is to create a space where artists can explore the changing identities of cultural heritage and how it can be used in Mithila art to experiment with the traditional themes to represent the new identities of the society.
